In the past, I’ve used the envsetup.sh aproach a lot (Bash) – learned that working with the Android build system.

this idea is great for narrow view of e.g. single component but when you consider complex systems like linux distributions with multi meta systems which language is your main language ?

Good point, there is a place for languages like Bitbake.

Just remembered, Dagger.io is one place we are seeing a shift back to programming languages for things like build, deployment, etc.
