Someone recently asking me how to combat binge watching (youtube, etc). I personally struggle more with binge reading on various technical topics – easy to get distracted with all the neat stuff going on these days. Some methods I’ve found that work:
- Track hard numbers – like number of billable hours each day and plot them over time. Its hard to improve if you don’t measure.
- Bullet journaling – reflection is important.
- turn off email and all other notifications
- have a reading list where you note things you want to read – later
- do deep work in morning, and save all reading for late afternoon/evening
- send reading stuff to read to a BOOX tablet using their push service
Cal Newport has written extensively on these topics (deep work, digital minimalism, etc).
What works for you?
