apk is alpine’s package manager and has been cornerstone of alpine and its derivative distros. Now OpenWRT has dropped opkg in favor of using apk, it will be one of first non-alpine based distro to use it.

A long time ago I got bitten hard by Alpine’s package manager and it really put me off from using Alpine for anything. I’m sure they’ve fixed many of the issues since that time, but it left a very bad taste in my mouth after having used more mature package management tooling.
@bradfa yeah, all of us have had bad experiences of this kind with different s/w pieces, I can recount mine so many times, e.g. reinstalling ubuntu on upgrades because apt could not restart the upgrade that was left inbetween and similar with Fedora where installing KDE on top of default WM would not let me login and only option left was to re-install, I can go on and on
