I got an email recently:
While it appeared to be phony and not something I am remotely interested in, I was curious about the emails - are these valid people? The bruchez domain resolved to an attorney’s firm, and the satoshoji-co.com redirected to the Japanese company. With a little more analysis, it is obvious what they are doing.
Someone registered a similar domain, and redirected to the main web site. Thus when you load the domain to check it, unless you look carefully and see the re-direct, it may appear like a valid domain, and thus assume it is a valid email address. Pretty clever, and the scary thing is, it took a guy who hosts his own websites and email server a few moments to figure out.
With AI, the messages in these types of scams will get better and better - no longer can we rely on spotting typos and obvious mistakes.
But we can also use AI to detect these things (I’m sure Google and MS are doing this already). Seems like an arms race … where will it end?
