3D modeling using KiCad and FreeCad is working very well. The process is:
- add models to all your parts in KiCad. Most manufacturers now provide models on their web site. The import process in KiCad is really slick with +/- buttons where you can bump your model around until it is in the right place.
- export model of PCB from KiCad in STEP format
- pull PCB and enclosure models into FreeCad. Move/rotate them until everything is aligned. Again, use the +/- buttons to bump things around. And you get something like below.
