The AmScope SM-4NTPX-144A microscope is a recent addition to the BEC lab.
This enables rework of 0201-size components with relative ease. Below is an example rework of a diff pair that needed to be swapped. Notice the size of 0201 resistors compared to a 0.5mm mechanical pencil tip.
The microscope part number can be decoded as follows:
- SM-4: You get the double-arm boom stand, which is critical for stability and smooth gliding over your PCB.
- NTP: You get the simul-focal head (so you can use a camera and both eyes at the same time) with focusable eyepieces (better for fine-tuning camera focus match) and the zoom lock (useful to prevent accidental changes).
- X: This suffix means it includes a 0.5x Barlow lens out of the box. This is the “magic” piece that pushes your working distance from a cramped 100mm to a comfortable 165mm, giving you space for your hot air tool.
- 144A: It includes the 144-LED ring light, which is the standard for bright, shadow-free illumination.
